• On the way to Tunisia
September 18, 2004
Out of the desert and onto tarmac headed for Tripoli. The last night in the Libyan Desert was a memorable one for the team. During the day, our guides mentioned about some nomads in the area that they could perhaps contact to meet up with the team.
As the excited team members gathered at Sandro's tent, who had graciously made us mushroom soup and 'nomad' bread cooked in the sand, Dr Zaini (Zulu) announced the arrival of the nomads and warned the team to be careful as the nomads were not used to tourists.
The nomads turned out to be Sandro, Roberto and Marta, our Italian desert guides! Wearing wigs and make up, they entertained the team and had most of us on the ground, laughing till we cried.
It was a wonderful end to the Libyan Desert section of our expedition. We are looking forward to using our desert driving skills to explore the Tunisian Desert, but first we have to restock in Tripoli and cross the border.
Mohd Faruk Abdul Rahman, the Logistics Director said, "After a week in the desert having fun, now I have to get back to work and make sure everyone and their vehicles get across the Libya-Tunisia border. I hope we can clear the formalities quickly and get back into the desert."
