Desert bound in Libya

September 11, 2004

The city of Tobruk Stocking up on food at the Tobruk market

Street scene in Tobruk

The team had a good rest in Tobruk. We replenished our drinking water and food stocks and left Tobruk only at 9.30 this morning. It was a straightforward drive to Al Jagbub, where we refueled and filled all our water tanks. We will be camping in the desert for the next six nights.

Immediately after refueling, we headed into the desert. At first the track was quite firm, but as we advanced into the desert we encountered soft sand and many tracks crisscrossing the desert. This is where our experience from last year's expedition to Africa Trek came in handy. Strict convoy procedures were followed, as no one wanted to get lost in the desert.

According to our guide Sandro, this is just the beginning. The dunes are ahead and he knows the team and the vehicles will be challenged to the limit. Joining the team in Libya are Roberto, Marta, Reza, Abdullah, and Mohamed, all experts in desert driving. The team will be learning a lot from these guys, and we are sure to have fun at the same time.
