Sneak preview of a leader

September 7, 2004

Expedition Leader Halim Rahman abides by his decisions The Red Sea lies ahead of the PAT convoy

What does it take to be a leader?
What are the characteristic traits of a leader?
Will the leader practice what he preaches?

Well, I am indeed learning the answers to all those questions as the expedition progresses. The 4WD expeditions are often associated with adventure and drama, driving skills and endurance. Yet in the midst of the passion for adventure, I find a whole myriad of characters and personalities – people with different views and outlooks.

I consider myself privileged to get a sneak preview into the life of a leader and watch what makes him tick. I have been observing Halim Rahman, the expedition leader with great admiration. I admire his courage, confidence and the sense of presence he commands each time he walks into a room. I respect him for he is able to hold his ground and remain true to his principles no matter what the circumstance. By watching Halim, I learn the importance of making decisions and abiding by them.

Emotions tend to run high especially when things do not seem to go the expected way despite all the preparations. At moments like these, I am privileged to watch how a true leader skilfully holds the group together and handles the members with all their varied characters. I believe that all the management schools put together will not be able to teach me first hand leadership skills such as I am learning from the expedition.

With such high ideals, when I do not live up to expectations, I feel that I have failed not only myself, but also a great leader and the entire team. I strive to push myself to greater heights for I want to meet and exceed the high standards set. Being in Halim’s presence, I am reminded, “good enough is not enough, and it is the enemy of the best”.

We spent one night at the La Meridian Beach Resort by the Red Sea. I have never seen so many tourists come together in one spot. They came in busloads to the resort. I do not like crowds, and I could not understand how holiday seekers were willing to spend money to be in the midst of crowds. Nevertheless, I felt a sense of awe and wonder walking along the shores of the Red Sea.
