Turkey - Land of mystique, oriental splendour and intrigue. Ancient yet rapidly modernizing, with a history of civilisation dating back some 10,000 years.
Istanbul's Blue Mosque marked the starting point for Silk Road Adventure 2001. Initially, our route led south, in an easterly direction. We passed Izmir, then Pamukkale. The scenic route opened windows to the charm of the Turkish countryside. The road to Antalya entailed driving up and down mountain roads. We also experienced the Turkish style of relaxing. After exploring ancient historical sites and a long journey, we found Bursas Hot Spring Baths rejuvenating.
Moving on, we were overwhelmed by natural wonders at Cappadocia. We explored Turkeys most famous district and even viewed the amazing landscape from the air - in hot air balloons !

The land seemed bare but the volcanic soil is rich in minerals, accounting for the surprising abundance of vineyards and fruit orchards. Amazing sights include an Open-Air Museum, rock-hewn churches and dwellings, fairy chimneys, and underground cities. We also visited shrines, ancient cemeteries, and bazaars - a thriving legacy of the Silk Road.
Moving across South Eastern Anatolia, we were treated to ever changing vistas. As our convoy wound its way through mystical Turkey, we soaked in more fascinating sights and sounds. Reaching the border with Iran, we passed biblical Mount Ararat said to be the resting place of Noahs Ark. Just ahead, Iran beckoned.
