SUDAN EGYPT LIBYA TUNISIA ALGERIA

The Republic of Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It stretches from Egypt in the north to Uganda in the south and shares borders with nine countries. Dominated by the Nile and its tributaries, the country is generally flat. It has mountains in the far south, northeast and west. The Sahara Desert covers about 700,000 square kilometres, or more than one quarter of the country. Despite Sudan’s civil war, travel is possible in some parts of the country.

Sudanese highlights:

The capital city of Khartoum lies where the Blue and White Niles converge. Called the "Mougran", the merging point of the Blue and White Niles is a breathtaking spectacle.

• Bayuda Desert is a section of the Sahara wedged between bends in the Nile. The landscape is varied – from ancient volcanic black cone-shaped formations to acacia forest, and rolling grassy savannahs.

Royal City of Meroe & its Pyramid Fields lie nearby to Shandi. While not as grand as Egypt’s Great Pyramids of Giza, the pyramids of Meroe are testament to a once great kingdom, which once ruled Egypt for 100 years.
