In August 2004, the PETRONAS Adventure Team embarked upon its sixth international mission a stirring journey of discovery across North Africa. From Khartoum in Sudan, 44 Malaysians journeyed in a convoy of 18 cars through Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. One of their biggest challenges was traversing the Sahara, the world’s largest desert that invariably dominates their route from Khartoum to Casablanca. The 39-day journey covered more than 10,000 grueling kilometers, over scorching sand dunes through the cradle of ancient civilisation to the dizzying heights of the Atlas Mountains.

EPISODE ONE: “LOST IN THE SAHARA” (22 Nov 2004)
Excitement mounts in Khartoum, as the team helps the local community. A last minute route change puts everyone on edge, even as Meroe’s Black Pyramids mesmerise. The Sahara the world’s largest desert piques their interest as they rush to catch their ferry at Wadi Halfa. But a car goes astray in the desert lost, with an overheated engine! Can the team make the border in time or must they return home disappointed?
EPISODE TWO: “TEMPLES AND PYRAMIDS OF THE PHARAOHS” (29 Nov 2004)
The cradle of ancient civilisation welcomes the PETRONAS Adventure Team. Before them stand magnificent relics of a glorious past temples, mausoleums, the Great Pyramids of Giza. And then, one of the world’s oldest Islamic cities Cairo. By helping two needy organisations in Idku, the Malaysians prove that friendship missions blend well with community relations.
EPISODE THREE: “OASIS OF MOSQUITOES” (6 Dec 2004)
The team faces a relatively more developed but still desolate Libyan Desert. For almost a week, they camp in the wilderness. Aided by Italian and Libyan guides, they overcome 150-metre dunes. Waw en Namus caldera - one of Sahara’s natural wonders awes them. Then, a crisis - the convoy runs desperately low on fuel! The nearest military outpost is 200 kilometres away. Then a leaky gearbox adds to the leader’s woes. Can they survive Sahara’s wrath?
EPISODE FOUR: “SAND SEAS OF LIBYA“ (13 Dec 2004)
The team is spellbound by the variety and vastness of Libya’s sand seas and dunes. Shimmering Um El Ma Lake tempts those unable to swim. Ancient structures, from Berber underground homes to the World Heritage Site of Sabratha, continue to amaze. Venturing into the fourth country of their expedition, Tunisia, the team befriends the people of Tataouine. Then a local mystery beckons. What will they discover in Chenini’s ancient mosques and ksours?
EPISODE FIVE: "SHIPS OF THE DESERT" (20 Dec 2004)
Tunisia may be North Africa’s smallest country, but it’s a land that continues to amaze with natural wonders from small yet treacherous sand dunes, to salt lakes worth more than gold in ancient times. The ships of the desert entice the PETRONAS Adventure Team to give up their beloved 4WDs for a Roman fort. In Algeria, they help a hospital and a vocational school. Then, local tribesmen start firing muskets! Is all going well?
EPISODE SIX: "THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS" (27 Dec 2004)
A detour to Spain allows the team to approach Morocco from the sea! In their final African destination, the Malaysians tour the World Heritage Site of Fez, one of medieval Morocco’s wealthiest and most
influential cities. Treacherous winding tracks lead them to remote Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains, where they are warmly received. After entering the Dadès Gorges and the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” they discover Marrakech and its world heritage medina. By the 39th day, the Atlantic coast and Casablanca mark the finale of another landmark expedition.
