10 April 03 - It was a hectic trip to the Republic of South Africa - meetings, briefings, embassies, and visas. The team got to work as soon as they arrived at 6 am.
After a quick breakfast with PETRONAS Adventure Team South Africa (PAT SA) and some planning, Azman was off visiting the High Commission of Malaysia in Pretoria. Azman briefed the Malaysian High Commissioner H.E. Datuk Zainal Azman Zainal Abidin on the current situation of the expedition and also sought his help in obtaining visas for Mozambique and Zambia.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team went to look at some 4x4 equipment to be used in the expedition. Halim was quite impressed by the quality of the equipment and planned to install the Storms with the latest 4x4 gadgets and give them a good test on the roads of Africa.
On Day Two, PAT SA gave a full briefing on security and health issues, routing and a thorough report on their recent recce trip. After a long day and a great lunch, the team headed for Pretoria for dinner at the Malaysian High Commissioner's residence.
PAT is grateful to the High Commissioner for organising a dinner at such short notice and they even managed to invite representatives from the countries we will be driving through in Africa Trek 03. Malaysia Boleh!
15 April 03 - After briefings and meeting with PAT SA, the team split up – one group went to Durban where we will start the expedition from and the other to Cape Town where the expedition will conclude.
Faruk and Dr Zaini drove to Durban and met up with MISC representative Dave Orchard. He showed them around Durban, visiting the port, custom clearance areas and also checked for suitable hotel accommodations.
Meanwhile, Halim and Azman had several meetings in Cape Town with PETRONAS subsidiary Engen Petroleum Ltd to discuss their role in the expedition. They also checked out the venue of the welcoming ceremony and other facilities in Cape Town.
The PETRONAS Adventure Team can expect a once in a lifetime adventure this year as they will be travelling through 14,000km of the best that Africa can offer. It’s going to be tough. Here’s a sample of what we will be seeing and experiencing.
3 April 03 - The PETRONAS Adventure Team management departed Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning for Johannesburg in South Africa for their final African recce. The team comprising expedition leader Halim Abdul Rahman, operations director Faruk Abdul Rahman, promotions and marketing director Azman Baharuddin, Dr Zaini Sharaani, and documentary producer Harun Abdul Rahman will be in Africa for a week to finalise the expedition route.
Upon arrival, Azman and Harun drove to Pretoria to meet with the Malaysian Ambassador. Watch this space for more information about their final recce.
1 April 03 - Although the Africa Trek Expedition is still some distance away, work has already begun. For instance, the 21 4WDs are being repainted in the official expedition colours.
All cars will sport a new look in time for the first vehicle scrutineering scheduled for early May. A month later, the cars will be shipped to their first destination in Africa for the start of the expedition.
25 April 03 - PETRONAS Motorsports and PETRONAS Adventure Team management recently concluded interviewing 16 PETRONAS staff for the last two places on the PETRONAS Africa Trek expedition.
The equal number of non-executives and executives were grilled on several issues such as what each would contribute to the team and how knowledgeable they were about PETRONAS and its brand essence. The final decision will be known in a week’s time. Good luck to the candidates!
