A JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME TO THE ROOF OF THE WORLD 11th August | Hello Himalayas! Here I come.
It was indeed a rare privilege to participate in this expedition under the banner of PETRONAS. As an employee of the company, I must admit that I am very proud. With the company emphasis on the brand essence “Energy receive, Energy return, Aspiring people everywhere,” certainly PETRONAS Adventure Team (PAT) has done an excellent job in getting the message across the geographical boundaries of the world. As a team member, I will do my part for PETRONAS and will make sure my deliverables are my best.
I have roughly a week before the flag-off ceremony on the evening of August 17 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The preparation for such an expedition is not an easy task. Halim, the Expedition Leader once mentioned that there is no detail that is too small to be ignored. All factors that can or may affect the convoy are taken into account.
There is one major concern in this expedition: ALTITUDE. All team members attended a medical briefing on July 9 by the expedition doctors, Dr. Avtar and Dr. Khairuddin. After the doctors finished their medical explanation about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), I was wondering why some people (including myself) are risking their lives to go to this place? Maybe I’ll find the answer when I’m there.
I have been assigned a few tasks for this expedition: to write this Himalayan journal and manage the vehicle spare parts. Another PETRONAS participant, Bala has been given the task of assisting Expedition Management Dr Zaini; one of his tasks is camping management. Throughout the journey, Badrol from PETRONAS Motorsports will be sampling PETRONAS Syntium lubricants every 3,000km.
Even before the start of the expedition, I am already very excited about the trip. I’m enjoying the preparation that I have to do, such as learning how to perform science demonstrations. Bala, Badrol, Zainab (another team member) and myself will be very well prepared when it’s our turn to entertain the children during the Community Relations Programme in Bangkok, Kunming and Lhasa.
I believe that this journey will be an experience to treasure. For me, it’s the privilege of being able to bring hopes and smiles to the people we meet along the way. I hold to PETRONAS’s motto “Progressive, Enriching, Passionate, Trusted” for this journey to infuse passion and enrichment of lives to these people and their future generations. Let them remember that there are still people of different nations and belief who care.
I am definitely looking forward to the expedition with anticipation and with an open mind. |
