ARCHIVED JOURNAL
- WEEK 4

ON TOP OF THE WORLD 10th September | It was the proudest moment for everyone when we finally saw the glimpse of Mount Everest, or locally known by Tibetans as Qomulangma. I was stunned to witness such a breathtaking sight – probably the best thing ever happened to my life. Friday, 9.9.2005 was the day I will remember till the rest of my life as the day being on top of the world. It was a dream that came true.
Getting here was never been easy for all of us. In my personal record, we have traveled 7861 km from Kuala Lumpur, drove through 11 mountain passes in China with the record height of 5250 meters, cheated the acute mountain sickness, experienced the rough, muddy and dusty off-roads, dodged through several landslides and survived the outdoor camping with sub-zero temperature. We went through all these obstacles with success. But our real challenge was when our expedition leader, Halim, told us that our convoy was denied to enter the base camp despite all the federal and provincial bureaucratic permits and fees. None of us can believe it after reaching this far.
The team never gave up!
On Thursday evening, we camped a short distance away from the checkpoint. The mood was somber for everyone. Sixty-forty percent chance was not a surety. Our local team handler had tirelessly driven back to New Tingri to meet the officials. This was our last chance. Many of us offer prayers that evening, asking God to let us through. Our prayers were answered in the morning when the convoy were be able to go to the base camp, but without staying overnight. That was already enough to cheer everyone. And the history was made by our team as the first convoy to enter the Everest Base Camp with our own vehicles.
I have heard stories about the challenges that people encountered while attempting to reach the summit of Everest. One of the expedition members, Dr. Zaini (Zulu) had shared his experience with the convoy on his attempt to reach the summit of the Everest in 1983 from the South side. Despite years of preparations, as well as meticulous calculation on the route taken and supplies, he had only managed to reach Camp 4 (out of 6) due to the unfortunate adverse weather during the ascend. In my case, I was only aiming the base camp of Everest, and the hardship was already to the outmost.
For many of us, to see the magnificent Mount Everest with our own eyes was a miracle. The journey to the Mount Everest had taught me that good things in life do not come easy, unless I work hard for it. This miraculous journey would not have been possible without luck, perseverance and blessing from God. |
