EXPERIENCING THE EXPEDITION 30th September | Well, the expedition has come to an end, but the friendships made during this event continue past the finishing date of Sept 28. We exchanged contact details, made plans for outings, and generally had fun reminiscing about our adventures during the PETRONAS Trans-Himalayas 2005 Expedition.
Yesterday morning, 23 cars were driven to Shekou Port and stuffed into Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC) containers for the journey home. Voyage will be on Oct 4, with the shipment expected about a week later at Port Klang. A container will also be sent to Bangkok and another to Kota Kinabalu. To commemorate the expedition, two containers came bedecked in PETRONAS green with event logos. It was an impressive sight indeed and they were probably the best dressed containers in the whole shipyard!
After the shipping formalities were over, we shopped for last-minute presents for family and friends before attending the PETRONAS Adventure Team dinner. Western food at its best, classic old time karaoke favourites in Malay and English, and the camaraderie fostered during our past 43 days in Thailand, Tibet, and China made the dinner extra special.
Certificates of participation to team members, plus gifts of appreciation to our title sponsor PETRONAS, official lubricant PETRONAS Syntium, official carrier MISC, official vehicle Ford and official tyres KUMHO Tires. It goes without saying; this event wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for our generous sponsors, so thank you! We also wish to thank Abdul Rahim Ismail, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Retail Thailand Limited and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Marketing China Company Limited (PMCCL), Clement Ooi Inn Hoe and their staff members for their assistance during the team’s presence.
A slide show of photographs by our official photographers Teoh Weng Kim and Jeffery Lim took centrestage and brought back good memories of PAT’s 7th expedition, with a lot of ooh-ing and ahh-ing as the images flashed across the screen. We see the world from our cars, but it takes photographers and videographers to show us the big picture – and what an inspiring sight it is. We were reminded how we were touched by the children’s enthusiasm during our community relations programmes in Bangkok, Kunming, and Tingri, and how we reciprocated in kind. We couldn’t speak their language yet through all kinds of sign and body languages, we bonded with children and the locals we met en route.
To be in this team, is to look out for each other, and making sure even cars are doing well. The management team also took the trouble to ensure everyone’s safety as well as hone new members in best convoy driving protocol, and wise usage of radio communication.
This has truly been an expedition to remember, and indeed an adventure of a lifetime. Who’d think that we would be the first Malaysian motorised convoy to reach Everest Base Camp and view Mount Everest from its North Face?
We experienced the expedition and we’d like you to experience it with us when we air the first of six episodes on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at 10pm on Malaysia’s TV2. Today, we head for home! |
