20 August : Cape Town: A GREAT ADVENTURE TO REMEMBER

The team arrived in Lamberts Bay on the 18th of August before the final drive to our final destination – Cape Town. The weather has finally begun to turn against the team; this is probably the worst weather the team has encountered throughout its 49 days. It was foggy, windy and very cold but the team was still in high spirits.

Everyone was looking forward to Cape Town and the flight home to their loved ones. Most of the team had spent the day in Lamberts Bay repacking their cars and making sure everything is lashed down properly for the shipping back to Malaysia.

That night the team had its last dinner together on the beach – a fantastic barbeque. Even with the rain and wind, we still managed to have a great time reminiscing the past 49 days. We had a wonderful expedition and as is evident tonight the memories we bring back with us will last for a lifetime.

We left Lamberts Bay early with only 270 kilometers of good roads to tackle. Arrived in Cape Town in time for a quick lunch and our finishing ceremony at Engen Square in the heart of this beautiful city.

One of the wettest and coldest days of the year (it was even snowing in the hills surrounding Cape Town!) greeted the team. The team was glad but at the same time sad the expedition is finally over.

Approaching Cape Town
The reception by Engen was attended by several dignitaries from Cape Town and also present was the PETRONAS Country Manager for Africa, Mr George Paul. Engen also presented a cheque of 500,000 Rand (RM257,769) to the St John Children Hospital as promised at the beginning of the expedition making our journey worth RM18 per kilometer!

With only one day to see Cape Town, the team did not waste any time. The cars were sent to the port early on Wednesday (20th August) morning to give the team maximum time for sightseeing and last minute shopping. Most of the team members vowed to return to the Cape of Storms another day with more time on their hands.

The PETRONAS Africa Trek 2003 is finally over. It has been an expedition of a lifetime. It was difficult at times, challenging man and machine to the limits but we achieved what we set out to do – 14,156 kilometers of Africa, 7 countries and 49 days later. See you back in Kuala Lumpur and don’t forget the first episode of our journey will be shown on RTM at 10.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 24th of September 2003.
