Africa is about vast proportions and exciting diversity. Covering almost 30 million square kilometers (29,987,840 sq km) or more than one-fifth the earth's land surface, it is the worlds second largest continent. Africa is bigger than Europe and North America put together, its 46 countries stretching from Algeria to Zimbabwe.
Few places can rival Africas scenic beauty. From the earths crust, formations developed over time leave us in awe. Mount Kilimanjaro, made famous by Hemingways The Snows of Kilimanjaro is Africas highest mountain. This magnificent giant stands at the northeastern tip of Tanzania. In Zambia lies the biggest curtain of falling water in the world - Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a World Heritage Site.
Africa has always been synonymous with wildlife and safari. National parks and reserves are peppered throughout central and south Africa. Its wildlife is among the most spectacular on earth, numbering over 300 species, and ranging in size from the tiniest pygmy shrew to the most imposing elephant. Lions and leopards strike fear in the hearts of prey but earn respect from watchful humans.
More than 817 million people live here. People and cultures are as varied as the continent. From the Berbers and Arabs of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to the Bushmen of Botswanas Kalahari Desert or the pygmies of the rainforest, the African tribes exhibit a rich, diverse, and colourful history.
Africa is a land for adventure. Outside the cities, accommodations are often camps. Savouring freshly brewed coffee, one listens to trumpeting elephants and the resounding hooves of thousands of antelopes. This is Africa: People. Culture. Places. Wildlife.
